Inspring Creativity and a DIY Photo Display

I was asked by Porch.com if I’d like to take some photos of the moments and things that inspire me in my home. An excuse to take photos and talk about my favorite things? Of course I was in! So for the last few weeks, I’ve been packing around my little Instax Mini Camera taking pictures of some of those little things that inspire me. And today I’m going to tell you about a few of my favorite inspirational things and show you how to make this EASY DIY Wood Slice Photo Display.

I could obviously go on for hours about this stuff, and take a million pictures of the things that inspire me, but to me, and I know it sounds soooo cheesy, inspiration is EVERYWHERE! Actually, I think my friends and family get sort of tired of hearing me “OMG that’s amazing,” over the color of every sunset, new dishes at a store, or the colors of the Easter eggs we dyed last night–true story, my oooo-ing and ahhh–ing sort of became the joke of the night. The point is, we are ALL creative!! You just have to see it!

Natural elements are probably one of the biggest things that get those creative juices flowing. Have you ever looked at the color of a sunset or a flower and thought, “I need paint just that color”? I do all the time. Nature is blowin’ my mind on a regular basis (just ask my husband) and provides lots of awesome (and free) material for creating ;) Don’t even get me started on my love affair with natural wood!

Travel is another big one for me. Anyone who’s been here for a while knows that our family memories are a BIG part of the decor and the things I create in my house. Travel doesn’t always have to be big and extravagant either. There’s nothing wrong with staying close to home and taking in the beauty that your own State has to offer. We do it all the time and those “vacations” are some of our favorite memories. (This is Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah.) Travel is my drug and I honestly don’t really care where it is. I just LOVE exploring new places, landscapes, customs and traditions, and of course, decor, textiles–you know, all that pretty stuff!

I love using the talents of others as my jumping off point too. Everything doesn’t have to be original and I find a lot of things that spark my creativity are ideas that I’ve sort of built off of and made my own. Or, like these dishes I just bought–another “OMG” moment in the middle of a store. These simple dishes with a little pop of color totally pulled a little spot together that I’d been struggling with for the last few weeks. I love letting the experts pick my color palettes and then taking it from there.

Of course, after gathering all of this inspiration full of my favorite things, I figured I should make a little something to display the photos. I threw together this one together in literally like five minutes! I picked up a wood slice from the craft store, along with a spool of string and just tightly wrapped the sting around the wood and secured each end with a thumbtack on the back. Really, that’s it! One of my favorite things–natural wood, to display a little sampling of my other favorite things!
