It’s Christmas Home Tour Day 2 here and today I’m teaming up with my good friend Lindsay over at White Buffalo Styling Co. for her Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours: Christmas Edition. If you’re just coming over from Burlap and Lace, welcome, welcome! Isn’t Shannon’s style so fabulous? Yesterday I shared Part One of my Christmas tour, my living room, kitchen, and entry way, and today it’s onto our basement family room. It’s a totally different vibe than the upstairs and I’m having a hard time deciding which is my favorite. I love them for different reasons.
Upstairs it’s all about soft, pastel colors and a rustic feel and here in the basement, it’s a little more traditional, a lot more plaid (my favorite), but super minimal and simple. This is the first year I’ve really done anything with this room for Christmas because up until this summer, it’s been sort of the black hole of the house (you can read more about that little makeover here) and I had so much fun playing with the already vintage, classic color vibe down here.
We don’t have a mantel anywhere in our house, so this shelf is pulling mantel duty this year. I pulled down most of the pictures and baseball memorabilia that usually sits up here, put a few Christmas prints in some of the frames I already had and added a few other simple Christmas touches like bottle brushes and ornaments on wood candlesticks. This is probably the most simple “mantel” I’ve ever done, and it’s my favorite BY FAR. I’m usually terrible at editing things down and keeping them simple, so I’m giving myself a little pat on the back for keeping this one simple. You can find the Free Printable Christmas Countdown here, “Oh by Golly…” print here, and “Yes Virginia” print in my shop.
These tiny bottle brush trees in votive holders just make me smile.
The tree is one we’ve had since we got married, and was actually our main tree up until last year. Which, by the way, shocks me every time I look at it, it’s so tiny It was a cheap $60 tree we bought on Black Friday the year we got married and it’s definitely seen better days. BUT, it was the perfect size for this space and I bought a few big snowy picks on sale at Hobby Lobby and it totally gave this sad little tree new life.
I used a mix of handmade ornaments and garlands from years past (like the star garland and paper pinwheels–don’t judge the old pictures in this link please ), dollar store ornaments (the merry Christmas and wood stars from the Target Dollar Spot) and embroidery hoops with some scraps of plaid I had and lace from a runner that was my grandma’s. Then there are lots of my mom’s ornaments mixed in, so the tree is fully of love and nostalgia.
I was originally going to hang the stockings on the “mantel” shelf, but I liked how clean and simple it was and didn’t want to add anything else, so I grabbed one of these hat hangers I had lying around (I find them all the time at the thrift store for like $1) and used that instead. I have to say, I totally love it!
This room is also basically our playroom, so I added a some festiveness to some of my daughter’s things in here, like her little play table. I’ll tell you, between a hot chocolate station, and a Christmas “tablecloth” on her table, I have scored some mad mom points with my child this week. Who knew?!!
Just FYI, these little heart cookies are from Ikea and they’re as amazingly good as they are adorable.
You can find the tutorial for this No-Sew Table Runner here.
Even Barbie got a little tree for the Holiday Season
And last, but not least, my daughter’s room. I had an extra tree that I got from my grandma, so we decorated one for her room this year too. She saw a fur wreath at Target that she loved, but it was like $30, so we bought some spools of fur (in the ribbon section of the craft store) and wrapped it around a straw wreath. This may just be staying all year long. And I just love how crazy and imperfect this little tree is.
She also picked out the giant crown tree topper (from Hobby Lobby) and I’m pretty much obsessed with it on this funky little tree. All of the ornaments on this tree are from Target, where else?
And that, my friends, is the grand tour of our home. You can see part one from yesterday HERE, and if you want even more, you can find last year’s tour HERE. The next stop on today’s tour is one of my favorite gals: Caitlin from Desert Domicile. I can’t wait to head over and see what she’s got going on at her house!! And if you want to start from the beginning, you can head over to White Buffalo Styling Co and take the full tour.
